Poles come in two types, adjustable and non-adjustable. Non-adjustable poles are lightweight, strong and typically the most affordable option. Adjustable poles cost a bit more, and are great for backcountry skiing (where you might lengthen them for uphill travel and shorten them for skiing downhill) or for people who like changing the length of their poles depending on the where or how they’re skiing (e.g., longer for shredding powder and shorter for lapping the park). 

So, if you want something simple, tough, and don’t mind skiing the same length each day, pick a non-adjustable pole like the Triad or Legion. If you ski in the backcountry or like changing up length, an adjustable pole like the AK Adjustable or Carbon Adjustable is for you.

Poles come in a few different materials, typically versions of aluminum and carbon. Aluminum is the default for most poles because it balances light weight, durability, and lower cost. Armada uses a couple different types of aluminum, 6061 (on the Triad and Legion Jr.) for light weight affordability, and 7075 (on the Legion and AK Adjustable) for maximum strength and durability. Pick the one that’s right for your priorities. 

Carbon poles prioritize low weight and are indeed far lighter than their aluminum counterparts. The Carbon Adjustable is ideal for backcountry skiers who want efficiency over all else. For more all-around use that prioritizes durability over weight, aluminum options like the AK Adjustable might be a better choice.

If you ski more powder, you’ll want a bigger basket with more support in deep snow. If you ski more hardpack, groomers, and in the park, a smaller basket with less float will do great.

Armada’s 85mm powder baskets are available on the Triad BB(Big Basket), Legion, AK Adjustable, and Carbon Adjustable. Smaller 60mm baskets are available on the Triad and Legion Jr. Pick the model that suits where you’ll be skiing.

Pole length comes down to several different factors including height, skiing style, and personal preference. If you know you like to change things up, pick an adjustable length pole and do just that. 

To pick the length of a non-adjustable pole, start from the recommended standard and move up or down according to your preference. A good way to find the recommended length is with the right-angle rule. Standing on the floor, hold a pole upside down just below the basket (towards the handle). If your elbow sits at a right angle, this pole should fit you well.

Once you’ve determined your reference length, size up or down based on your preferences. All-mountain skiers can probably stick with the length they’ve chosen. If you want to tour with a non-adjustable pole, it might be advantageous to size up by 5cm. If you ski a lot in the park you may want to size down 5cm or more depending on your style.
